Behind the Lens: Award-Winning Photographer Shares His Favorite Slovenian Locations

Slovenia may be one of Europe’s smallest countries, but for landscape photographers, it offers some of the continent’s most dramatic and diverse scenery. Few know this better than Luka Vunduk, a Slovenian-born Canon Ambassador whose work has earned him recognition at the highest levels of international photography.

With multiple Platinum awards from the London Photography Awards, Gold recognition from the European Photography Awards, and a spot among One Eyeland’s World’s Top 10 Landscape Photographers, Vunduk has established himself as one of the leading voices in contemporary landscape photography. His journey with the camera began over 35 years ago as a curious boy photographing birds and squirrels in his local park—a passion that has since taken him across continents in search of extraordinary light and landscapes.

We asked him to share his favorite locations in his homeland—the places he returns to again and again, where light, landscape, and emotion converge.

Lake Bled: Where Fairytales Come to Life

“Lake Bled is perhaps Slovenia’s most recognized destination, yet it never fails to surprise me,” Vunduk explains. “The combination of the island church, the medieval castle on the cliff, and the Julian Alps as a backdrop creates layers of visual interest that change dramatically with the seasons and weather.”

What sets his approach apart is an intimate knowledge of hidden vantage points that most visitors never discover. While tourists gather at the popular viewpoints, Vunduk leads fellow photographers to elevated positions that transform the familiar scene into something extraordinary—particularly during autumn when golden larches frame the emerald waters, or in winter when snow blankets the surrounding peaks.

St. Thomas Church: A Heavenly Sunrise

Perched on a hill near the historic town of Škofja Loka, the Church of St. Thomas offers what Vunduk describes as “one of the most ethereal morning experiences in all of Europe.” When conditions align, mist from the nearby rivers fills the valleys below, creating the illusion that the church floats among the clouds.

“Timing is everything here,” he notes. “You need the right temperature differential, the right humidity, and you need to be in position before first light. But when it all comes together—when those first rays illuminate the Alpine backdrop and the mist begins to glow—it’s a moment that stays with you forever.”

Jamnik: The Balcony of Gorenjska

Known locally as “The Balcony of Gorenjska,” Jamnik offers sweeping panoramic views across rolling hills toward Slovenia’s highest peaks. The small church of Saints Primus and Felician stands as a timeless subject, but Vunduk treasures this location for more than its views.

“Some of my most memorable moments at Jamnik have nothing to do with photography,” he recalls with a smile. “There are horses that graze here, and they’re wonderfully curious. One morning, a friendly horse picked up my backpack and carried it several meters away. These unexpected encounters—this connection with the landscape and its inhabitants—that’s what makes a location truly special.”

Blejski Vintgar: A Walk Through Nature’s Gallery

The Vintgar Gorge, carved over millennia by the Radovna River, stretches 1.6 kilometers through dramatic rock formations. Wooden walkways suspended above emerald pools and cascading waterfalls create what Vunduk calls “a photographer’s playground.”

“Every section of the gorge offers different compositions—the interplay of light filtering through the canyon walls, the motion of water over ancient stone, the geometric patterns of the wooden bridges against organic rock. It’s a masterclass in finding intimate landscapes within a larger scene.”

Why Slovenia Captivates Photographers

When asked what makes Slovenia so special for landscape photography, Vunduk’s answer reflects his philosophy: “Slovenia offers extraordinary diversity in a compact space. Within a few hours’ drive, you move from Alpine peaks to Mediterranean coastline, from pristine lakes to ancient forests. But beyond the variety, there’s an intimacy here. These aren’t vast, overwhelming landscapes—they’re places where you can develop a relationship with the land.”

He pauses, then adds: “Photography allows me to express my natural curiosity and to explore the interplay between the outer landscape and my inner landscape. Slovenia, being my homeland, offers that connection in its purest form.”

Experience Slovenia Through an Expert’s Eyes

For photographers inspired to explore these locations themselves, Vunduk’s local expertise offers a significant advantage over navigating Slovenia independently. His knowledge of precise timing, hidden viewpoints, and optimal conditions comes from decades of working these landscapes in every season.

The Luka Vunduk Slovenia photo tour provides small group experiences with a maximum of seven participants, ensuring personalized guidance at each location. The all-inclusive format allows photographers of all skill levels to focus entirely on their craft while experiencing Slovenia’s most photogenic destinations through the eyes of someone who has spent a lifetime learning their secrets.

As Vunduk often says: “If you want to see the beauty of the world, you first have to seek the beauty within yourself.” Perhaps that journey of discovery begins with seeing a familiar place through new eyes—or an unfamiliar one through the eyes of someone who knows it by heart.
